"Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman..." II Timothy 2:15
FOLLOWING THE MODEL OF JESUS...
MINISTERING THE WORD:
-
Jesus ministered the Word of God through His teaching, which was the foundation of spiritual formation for His disciples. God's Truth brings spiritual transformation. Receiving the Word of God, which leads to the spiritual transformation of one's own life, creates confidence in ministering the Word of God for the transformation of others. "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, and who correctly handles the word of truth." II Tim. 2:15
MODELING:
-
Jesus modeled holy character, intimacy with the Father, spiritual disciplines, and ministry to people. In His life, we see the how-tos of Christian life and ministry. Biblical discipleship has at its core, instruction that is modeling based. "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." John 13:14-15
MENTORING:
-
Jesus gathered twelve men around Him with whom He spent extensive time, built deep personal realtionships, and invested in their lives. From this trusted position, Jesus counseled them and personally spoke into their lives to form them into ministers for God. "Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I will tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.'" Matt. 16:17-18. Peter was anything but a rock, but Jesus saw what he could become and spoke it into his life.
MINISTRY EXPERIENCE:
-
Jesus invited His disciples to participate with Him in ministry. It was "On the job training" and a necessary part a training for would-be ministers. He placed them in ministry settings, in order for them to learn dependence upon the Holy Spirit and in order to gain practical experience. "When Jesus had called the twelve together, He gave them the authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and He sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick." Luke 9:1-2
